- 日本には豊かな染織の歴史と伝統があるが、その中でも興味をそそられるものの一つに和紙の糸で織った紙布 (しふ) がある。紙布は庶民の冬の暖かな衣類や仕事着として工夫されたものが始まりといわれているが、時を経て洗練された優雅な染織工芸として他の染織品と肩を並べるようになった。紙布の注目すべき点は、その素材と手法にあり、素材である紙糸 (かみいと) は「生紙 (きがみ)」と呼ばれる手漉き和紙から独特な方法で作られるのである。著者はこの本で、紙漉職人による生紙の製紙法から、紙糸作りの準備、紙糸の撚り方、織りの準備段階までを、多くの写真を使って日英両語で丁寧に紹介している。「生糸と紙糸」はこの分野では初めての二ヵ国語で書かれた本であり、世界的にみても珍しい伝統工芸染織の技法を保存しておきたい、という著者の熱意に満ちあふれている。著者、軽野裕子は、糸紡ぎ、天然染料染め、織りに長年携わり、その技術を日本・カナダ両国で指導、講習してきた。奈良遷都1300年にあたる2010年には古都奈良で紙布のインスタレーションをおこなった。Among the many rich textile traditions of Japan, one of the most intriguing is 'shifu', a cloth woven with paper thread. Shifu was developed by poor people in need of warm clothing, but over time it was refined by skilled weavers into an elegant alternative to other textiles. What makes shifu so remarkable is the material from which it is woven, and in this lavishly illustrated book Hiroko Karuno reveals the intricate method of producing 'kami-ito', thread spun from sheets of handmade paper, or 'kigami'. In both English and Japanese she describes the making of kigami by a professional papermaker, plus preparing the paper for spinning, spinning the thread, and finishing the skeins in preparation for weaving.
