Customer Questions & Answers
-
Question:
What is the Fieldpiece STA2 in Duct Hot Wire Anemometer used for?
Answer: The Fieldpiece STA2 is designed for measuring air velocity and temperature in HVAC ducts. Utilizing hot wire technology, this anemometer provides accurate readings crucial for assessing airflow performance. By understanding airflow, HVAC technicians can optimize systems for energy efficiency and comfort, making it an essential tool for troubleshooting and verifying installations. -
Question:
How does the hot wire technology in the STA2 work?
Answer: The STA2 employs hot wire technology, where a thin wire is heated, and as airflow passes over it, the wire cools down. This change in temperature allows for precise calculation of the air velocity. This method is highly responsive and well-suited for measuring lower air velocities often found in duct systems, ensuring that HVAC professionals can easily diagnose and measure air distribution issues. -
Question:
Can the STA2 measure both temperature and velocity?
Answer: Yes, the Fieldpiece STA2 can measure both temperature and air velocity simultaneously. This dual functionality is beneficial for HVAC technicians as it provides a comprehensive view of airflow conditions. By analyzing both metrics, technicians can make informed decisions regarding system adjustments and enhance overall performance, leading to improved indoor air quality and comfort. -
Question:
What kind of displays and readings can I expect from the STA2?
Answer: The STA2 features an easy-to-read digital display that clearly shows air velocity in feet per minute (FPM) and temperature in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius. This user-friendly interface allows technicians to quickly assess data without confusion. Its convenience makes it ideal for rapid troubleshooting, ensuring that HVAC professionals can display results effectively to their clients. -
Question:
Is the STA2 suitable for both residential and commercial use?
Answer: Absolutely! The Fieldpiece STA2 is versatile enough for both residential and commercial HVAC applications. Whether checking airflows in home duct systems or large commercial environments, its accuracy ensures reliable performance. This adaptability makes it a valuable tool for HVAC professionals working across various job sites, meeting diverse client needs flawlessly. -
Question:
What is the maximum air velocity that the STA2 can measure?
Answer: The Fieldpiece STA2 can measure air velocities up to 5,000 FPM. This range is suitable for both low and high airflow applications, allowing users to cover a broad spectrum of HVAC tasks. When dealing with different types of systems, users can rest assured that the STA2 will provide accurate readings regardless of the challenges presented by varying conditions. -
Question:
Does the STA2 have data logging capabilities?
Answer: The Fieldpiece STA2 is specifically designed for real-time airflow measurements, but it does not have built-in data logging capabilities. However, technicians often pair it with other Fieldpiece tools that do feature logging for more extensive analysis if required. This allows HVAC professionals to assess trends over time while still having a dedicated anemometer for instant measurements. -
Question:
How can I maintain my Fieldpiece STA2 for optimal performance?
Answer: To keep the STA2 performing optimally, ensure the probe is clean and free from obstructions. Regularly inspect the battery, as low power can affect measurement accuracy. Storing the device in its protective case when not in use will help avoid physical damage as well. Maintenance is simple, making it easy for HVAC technicians to ensure reliable performance throughout its lifespan. -
Question:
What additional accessories might I need with the STA2?
Answer: While the Fieldpiece STA2 can operate standalone, additional accessories like protective cases or extendable probes can enhance its usability. A protective case can safeguard the device during transportation, while extendable probes are useful for measuring in hard-to-reach areas. These accessories aid technicians in collecting accurate data, improving their efficiency on various jobs. -
Question:

Fieldpiece Anemometers STA2 Editorial Review
This Fieldpiece tool is a great purchase for anyone in the HVAC field or even DIYers needing to evaluate their duct work. Although it doesn't come with a NIST calibration certificate, it does come with a typical Fieldpiece case and tip protector. It can measure CFM at the supply plenum of an air handler, and even CFM and FPM at a room supply register by holding up to the vent, although it'll require a number of readings and calculations. The magnetic strap on the back is a nice touch, although it doesn't come with a stand. The technology is truly amazing, and even though it's not as accurate as a flow hood, it's still probably accurate enough to be 90% within range.
