Friendship Editorial Review
**** The book "I Who Have Never Known Men" by Jacqueline Harpman presents readers with a chilling yet captivating journey through a dystopian reality where women are held captive in an underground bunker. Set against a backdrop that echoes the hallmarks of female oppression present in other well-known dystopian literature, it succeeds in drawing readers into an exploration of identity, memory, and the sheer will to survive. Critics praise the writing style for its ability to compel them to turn page after page, as Harpman's intricate Prose evokes a visceral sense of the characters' plight. Through the eyes of a girl known only as "The Child," the narrative deftly navigates the complexities of human nature and the longing for freedom within a tightly controlled yet simultaneously bizarre environment. The lack of traditional chapter breaks enhances the feeling of immersion, with several readers remarking that they couldn’t put it down. However, while the book is filled with intriguing potential, it leaves many critics feeling unsatisfied due to its open-ended nature. Despite the thought-provoking themes and emotional weight of the story, several voiced frustrations regarding unanswered questions and a sense of repetition as the plot unfolds. The abrupt conclusion and the philosophical queries it raises serve to enrich discussions, making it a relevant choice for book clubs, though some readers found the depressing tone to be unsettling. Overall, readers who appreciate exploring heavy and complex themes within a unique narrative structure may find "I Who Have Never Known Men" a rewarding read. Nonetheless, this is a story that may not resonate with those looking for resolution or light-hearted entertainment. **Pros and Cons:** **
